Mas Villa is a historically significant manor house with a unique 250 year history in the hill country of Sri Lanka.
It was here that the well known Sri Lankan political personality and key individual in the construction of the nearby Kotmale dam, the late Hon. Gamini Dissanayake, was born.
Dissanayake’s youth was spent here and later on, his political office in the hill country was administered from the same premises. Since 1994, his ashes are interred in a quiet corner of the surrounding land. The manor house continues to be owned and maintained by successive generations of the Dissanayake family.
Many noteworthy events have taken place during the long history of the manor house. This includes the marriage registration of Gamini Dissanayake’s great grandfather; the first marriage to be duly recorded in the Kandy district in 1867. Many state guests have also spent time at Mas Villa.
The house was vested in the government for a short period from 1981 – 1987, as were all other properties in the vicinity. Fortunately, the house was not affected by the rising waters of the reservoir and returned to the original owners in 1988.
